A Young Voice That Leads: A Student’s Commitment to Her Community

Our community is full of young people with talent, dedication, and a deep desire to make positive contributions. One shining example is Melissa Sanchez-Devora, a twelfth-grade student at Eagle Valley High School, who, in addition to preparing for her academic future, dedicates her time and energy to supporting other youth through the Tu Guía program.

Melissa was born in Vail, Colorado, and has lived her entire life in Gypsum. She spent her childhood in Buckhorn Valley and now lives in Cotton Ranch with her family: her parents, originally from Zacatecas, Mexico, her three siblings and her cat Rosie. Her home is full of warmth and unity: “We enjoy spending time together and playing board games. My siblings and I get along very well, so it's always nice to

share time together.”

The person who inspires her the most is her father. “My dad inspires me because at a young age, he left everything behind and came to the United States. Although it was difficult at first, now he owns his own business and works very hard to give us the best life possible. He motivates me every day with his effort, discipline, and dedication.”

Since the eleventh grade, Melissa has been a tutor in the Tu Guía program, where she supports other students in their academic and personal growth. “My role in Tu Guía is to help students with their studies. I assist them in solving problems, explain academic subjects, and inspire them to reach their full potential. I’m proud to know that my support makes a difference.”

What she’s most passionate about in the program is witnessing students' progress: “Every conversation is an opportunity to support and encourage them a little more.” This role has helped her grow as a leader and has strengthened essential skills like empathy, communication, and teamwork.

To other students considering joining, she says:“Being a tutor in Tu Guía is a very valuable experience. Not only do you help others learn, but it also helps you grow as a person. It’s a great opportunity to make a real difference.”

Beyond her involvement with Tu Guía, last summer Melissa participated in the Youth Power 365 program, where she served as a soccer coach for children from kindergarten to second grade. “We had games almost every Sunday. It was very special to see the kids' joy and be part of their growth.”

With a clear vision and well-defined goals, Melissa plans to begin her university studies next semester at Colorado Mesa University, where she will pursue a bachelor’s degree in Radiologic Sciences, with the goal of becoming an ultrasound technician. Her interest in the health field is deeply tied to her desire to help others: “I enjoy doing my part to help people.”

She also recently earned her Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification, which she hopes to use this summer while working at Castle Peak, gaining more experience in the medical field.

Melissa represents the best of our youth: commitment, responsibility, empathy, and the drive to grow. It is truly a source of pride to have young people like her in our community—not only preparing for a bright future, but already leaving a mark today.

From the Tu Guía program and all members of Mountain Youth, we celebrate Melissa’s participation in one of our programs and encourage the entire community to support, uplift, and believe in our youth. Because when a young person leads, an entire community moves forward.
