  • History | Mountain Youth

History Mountain Youth was founded in 2001 as the Eagle River Youth Coalition. It was designed as a collaborative vision of Leadership Vail Valley, the Eagle CARES Survey team and Eagle County to provide cohesion among youth service providers. Mountain Youth was tasked with building Positive Youth Development (PYD), a strengths-based approach to adolescence, throughout the Eagle River Valley. Mountain Youth was charged with overseeing data assessment to ensure the community had an honest measure of youth behaviors and perceptions and a way to analyze effectiveness and gaps in youth services. These outcomes continue to drive Mountain Youth in collaborative planning of youth services. We work with many service providers, so the community can effectively assess and meet the changing needs of youth, ultimately mobilizing the community for positive change. Mountain Youth has a wide reach but with a vision, a mission and core values rooted in making youth a community priority, Mountain Youth rallies support to enable youth to reach their full potential. We listen to the needs of the community and respond with programs that educate, enhance and encourage strong relationships and positive decision making. Continuing to use the PYD framework, Mountain Youth provides substance use prevention, safe driving education, youth advocacy and parent education throughout the Eagle River Valley. Mountain Youth’s work ensures Eagle County youth remain a priority; striving to be a community where young people are equipped with skills that support healthy bodies, healthy minds and improved decision making and leadership skills to guide their lives. We are a nimble organization focused on creating a better Eagle County for all — giving youth a voice in our community.

  • Social Norms | Mountain Youth

Social Norms Positive peer influence Mountain Youth relies on the power of positive peer influence through the science-based and best-practice approach of positive social norms marketing. Oftentimes youth behaviors and attitudes are influenced by perceptions of what they believe to be the “norm.” By spreading positive messages taken directly from the Healthy Kids Colorado Survey results, Mountain Youth attempts to align these misconceptions with reality. Mountain Youth markets HKCS statistics through the “Be Your Best U. ” campaign. This campaign has been youth-led from the beginning when we held two three-hour focus groups with middle school and high school students. They analyzed the data, picked out the most important behaviors that need to be shared, and gave input on what the designs should look like. For the month of December, we will be focusing on mental health, then bullying in January, and substance use in February. 2020-2021 Social norms Campaign Be Your Best U. • Community Surveys | Mountain Youth

Did you know that despite being the LARGEST growing age group in our valley, no research has been done on the 18-25 (young adult) population in Eagle County? Mountain Youth, with the help of OMNI, is excited to launch the Young Adult Survey starting February 1st! Similar to Healthy Kids and the Parent Survey, the young adult survey will collect important local data including demographics, mental health, substance use, social interaction, and more questions that are concerning to the young adult population. Vanessa Contreras and Armando Fuentes are two local young adults leading this project, and they are looking to engage as many young adults as possible in this survey collection. Data will be available to the public in late April. The survey is anonymous for those taking it. Para mas informacion sobre la encuesta por favor contactarse al correo vcontreras@mountainyouth.org Parent Survey Parents and caregivers of the Eagle River Valley are invited to participate in this anonymous survey administered by Mountain Youth, in conjunction with the Healthy Kids Colorado Survey for 6th-12th grade youth. We feel it is important that these two surveys occur simultaneously to foster conversation with your child(ren) about these important topics. Filling out this survey should take about 15-20 minutes. The collected data is anonymous and the results will be analyzed by Mountain Youth and Communities That Care. Our short-term goal is to provide parent perceptions and neighborhood behaviors to our community with the long-term goal of improving overall health outcomes. Please take this survey once, even if you have more than one child. All questions are optional, if there's a question you don't feel like answering or doesn't apply, feel free to move on to the next. Some of the questions may be difficult or triggering. We have provided a list of resources at the end of the survey and encourage you to reach out should you want to talk to anyone or access support. It is important to note that we define "youth" as anyone 25 or younger, aligning with the state definition. As a thank you for filling out this survey, at the end, you will be able to indicate the school or local nonprofit you would like to receive a portion of the incentive fund. The last day to take this survey is February 23, 2024. Thank you so much for your participation. Please direct any questions to info@mountainyouth.org . Partnering with 14 public and private schools, 3,786 students were surveyed, providing valuable insight about 6th -12th graders in the Eagle River Valley. This insight allows educators, nonprofit leaders, policymakers, and community program providers to keep a pulse on the behaviors, attitudes, and perceptions of young people in the community. This data is used to steer programming and secure much-needed resources, helping local and statewide policy efforts by utilizing the identified strengths and barriers facing youth. HKCS data helps bring in millions of dollars annually for community partners to support identified needs. Mountain Youth has partnered with Eagle Valley Behavioral Health, an outreach of Vail Health, to introduce the Healthy Kids Colorado Survey Dashboard to the community. This user-friendly platform allows for a better understanding and breakdown of middle and high school youth behavioral data. The dashboard incorporates data from past years to recognize trends. Users will be able to filter by various demographics for 2017-2019 data. The dashboard is accessible in English and Spanish.
